Who we are

We build engineers.
The car keeps score.

Rice Motorsports Team is a student group building a single-seat solar race car for the American Solar Challenge. Electrical, mechanical and business all work on the same deadline, and the car is the thing that tells us whether we got it right.

Our mission is the people

We exist to turn out electrical and mechanical engineers who have actually built something that had to work in front of judges. Not a class project marked on a rubric — a vehicle that gets inspected, scrutineered and then driven a thousand miles by people who are responsible for it.

Behind them sits a business team that is treated as equally technical. Sponsorship, budgeting, logistics and outreach are the reason there is carbon in the shop and a trailer at the start line, and we staff them accordingly.

How we got here

2026

Founded

A handful of students, a whiteboard and a decision to build a solar car from scratch rather than join something that already existed.

Carrera on the grid

Design reports, build review and scrutineering stand between us and a start line. Clearing them puts a Rice-built solar car into the Formula Sun Grand Prix and the American Solar Challenge.

Come build it with us

Every major, every year, no experience assumed. The people who end up running sub-teams mostly started by showing up to a build night.
